Visit to Utah Part 5: Fun with Grandma Sue

We also got to spend a couple of days with Sam's mom and siblings, and we had a great time! One of the highlights was visiting Hollywood Connection, where the boys got to experience some fun rides. Wesley would get SO mad every time a ride ended! Talmage even got to ride the bumper cars, but they said he had to be in his own car! I tried to explain what he should do and didn't expect much, but he had a great time and figured out steering with a little coaching from me. He thought crashing into people was hilarious! My camera was dead, so thanks to Don and Kellie for the pictures!

Kellie made some adorable felt play muffins for the boys. She also gave them some more play dishes and a cute Thumper stuffed animal, which Wesley absolutely adored!

We wanted to go to the park one day, but it was rainy. So we went to a fancy new McDonalds and bought some ice cream cones and let the boys play on the toys. They had a blast!

We were, as usual, pretty much spoiled all the way around throughout our visit. Thanks to everyone for making it so fun! We hope to be back again soon. The boys can't stop talking about Utah--Wesley loves pretending things are airplanes and tells me they're flying to Utah. We're so grateful we have been able to visit so much since living in Texas. We love you all!

Visit to Utah Part 4: A BBQ with Grandpa Brady

The weekend was the best time to get together with Sam's dad, but General Conference made scheduling things a bit tricky. So on Friday night, Grandpa Brady and Grandma Elena came down to my parents' house for a BBQ! A dear friend of mine was also able to come--we've known each other since 3rd grade, although we spent several years as "worst enemies." :) It was so great to catch up with her! We had such a great time enjoying the beautiful Utah spring weather and chatting with everyone.

Grandpa Brady brought Bode the dog along, much to my boys' delight!

I'm not sure what was going on here, but it must have been pretty amazing.

Wesley and Bode have the same expression here--Wesley loves dogs!

I love this picture of my dad explaining the fire to Talmage!

I think Wesley would have spent just about every waking hour in the swing, if he could have.

And although these aren't pictures from the BBQ, here's a random one of Wesley... (he looks a little mad, but I just love the lighting in it)

...and one of the boys with my grandparents! We were so glad to be able to see them as well. We miss our visits we had with them while they were on their mission in Houston!

Grandpa Brady was also able to visit briefly on Saturday afternoon. We're so lucky to have our families living in the same general area so the boys can see everyone each time we visit.

Visit to Utah Part 3: An Adoring Aunt and Uncle

Aunt Av and Uncle Bronson are huge favorites among my kids. At this moment, Wesley is pointing to the pictures, exclaiming their names with excitement. Avalon and Bronson were so good to play with the boys all through our visit. Here are a few pictures of the fun!

Talmage wasn't really disgruntled although his face tells a different story.

That's better!

Wesley won't happily be held by just anyone--he has a special place in his heart for Aunt Av.

We even got to fly kites across the street. The concept of playing in the grass freely is kind of novel to the boys. Here we are always on the lookout for fire ant piles, and stings or bites of one kind or another are pretty common. Last summer when we visited Utah Talmage was in my parents' backyard and shouted to me, "Look Mommy! I'm laying in the grass!" as if the idea was so totally absurd.

Running around, getting out all of the pent-up energy in their little bodies is a favorite activity.

Wesley apparently wondered why on earth I would be wasting time taking pictures on such a beautiful day.

It wasn't terribly windy, but they managed to get the kites up a few times!

And digging in the backyard is always a hit. It's so handy to have a yard under construction when you have 2 little boys who love the dirt.

Thanks to Aunt Avalon and Uncle Bronson for spending so much time with the boys! We miss and love you!!!

Making our Voices be Heard

Things got a bit crazy last month and right at the peak of everything my laptop cord broke! My laptop should be back in commission on Monday, so more picture posts will have to wait. But in the meantime, I wanted to share an interesting experience.

About a month and a half ago, I came across a horrifying report of an abortion clinic in Houston. (Article can be found here, but be warned that the photos are VERY graphic and disturbing.)

While I didn't know how accurate the article was, I felt that it was my moral duty to alert the offices listed on the article and urge them to action against this organization. So I did, expecting little in the way of results. A day or so later, I received an e-mail from one of the offices stating that they could do nothing without a patient's name and date of treatment. And then, about a month later, I received an e-mail from the office of the Attorney General of Texas containing the following statement:

We share your outrage at the deeply troubling allegations against Dr. Karpen in Houston.  No right is more fundamental than the right to life.  And no life is more in need of protection than that of an innocent newborn child.   Because the alleged crimes occurred in Harris County, Texas law gives the Harris County District Attorney the sole power to prosecute this case.  For that reason, we immediately contacted the Harris County District Attorney’s Office upon learning of these allegations.

We offered the District Attorney any assistance our office can provide.  We also offered to facilitate coordination between local authorities and the Texas Rangers as the investigation proceeds.  While we lack the legal authority to initiate a prosecution in this case, we stand ready to provide any necessary assistance to those who have that authority.

We will continue to closely monitor the situation until these shocking allegations have been fully investigated and any guilty parties brought to justice.

Again, thank you for writing.  General Abbott always appreciates hearing from concerned citizens.

I'm well aware that my e-mail was likely not alone in evoking this kind of response. But I was greatly encouraged to see that, even on a state level, my voice was actually heard. I later learned that an investigation is currently underway. This has been just one experience of several as of late that has motivated me to make a stand when something isn't right and to make my voice be heard.

I often think of the scripture found in James 1:22 that states, "But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only." I hope that in the future I will do more than shake my head at troubling policies, wring my hands as I wonder what kind of world my children will grow up in, and wish for the generally accepted morals of the past. As I view the moral disintegration of our nation and the world around us, I hope that I can play a part in standing up and making my voice be heard in support of truth, justice, and morality.

Visit to Utah Part 2: Cousin Time

One of the big perks of visiting Utah is the time the boys get to spend with their cousins! Talmage has 2 cousins within 2 months of his age, round 2 of kids was spread out only a little more. So there are 6 kids age 3 and under who have a fabulous time playing outside at my parents' house!

My parents have been doing some work in their yard, so when we visited there was a very large mound of dirt the kids loved playing on.

This was so cute. Peter reached down to help Talmage up to the top...

and both boys crashed down to the bottom! (Sorry about the lighting, but we were just glad to catch it on camera!)

We also tried to have another cousin photo shoot. The kids were (unintentionally) wearing matching colors, the weather was perfect for pictures, and we thought it would be great. Too bad I didn't realize until after the fact that Wesley had grabbed the lens prior to the shoot and left a big fingerprint right on it. This resulted in a blurry spot in every single picture we took! Sad. My kids were also very uncooperative, which made for some interesting shots. (Hey, with 6 kids 3 and under what can you expect?) They're cute anyway.

I love how everyone was on board with the hugging idea except Wesley.

The wagon ride across the street was more fun than cramming onto a bench, apparently.

We also had a fun time spending a night at my sister's house with her kids, but I managed to let the camera batteries die, so no pictures. The boys certainly love their cousins!
